What is the Digital Switchover?

Communication Technology is Changing

The digital switchover is coming and as a result the UK’s phone lines are going digital.

For decades, phone calls have been carried over an analogue system known as the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN). While that’s serviced the country well in the past, it can’t keep up with the demands of the modern interconnected word.

So, in 2025* it’s being replaced and all phone calls will be carried over the internet instead (IP).

*this has now been pushed back until 2027.

What Does That Mean For Your Business?

Work from anywhere

With IP telephony the world is your oyster. You don’t need to connect to a physical exchange, instead your calls are handled in the cloud.

That means you can take your business line with you wherever you go, and can even make calls on different devices, including your mobile phone or laptop.

Interconnected solutions

When phone calls are carried over the internet they can be easily integrated into other systems.

This has led to the growth of ‘unified communications’, where you can have a single platform that deals with calls, video conferencing, instant messaging, file sharing, and more.

Value for money

The move to IP can be great for your bottom line.

Not only are internet phone calls usually cheaper, you don’t have to pay for any extra physical lines if you want to add a new user. As long as you have enough bandwidth, you can add new users without high costs.

Keep working no matter what

With IP phone systems, you have options if things don’t go to plan. If the power goes down in your office or you can’t access your premises, you can still make calls from your office number by simply using the mobile app.

No matter what the circumstances, you can keep your business up and running.

Simplify your life

There’s no need for separate lines for your internet and phones. With an IP system, all devices can connect through a single internet connection.

Making any device or new user setup quick and easy.
